As a Senior in the Graphic Design Department at RISD, I’ve learned a lot about the core fundamentals of good graphic design and have applied the many lessons I’ve learned throughout my work. But my drive and excitement for design comes more in the conceptual and directoral side, putting together worlds and identities bound by a cohesive system of typography, color, graphic elements, emotion, narrative, and style. I’ve sought to continue this passion through integrating my design more with my love of creative writing, in which I craft concepts and worlds for the stories I want to write through graphic design before fleshing them out. I find that there are many similarities between worldbuilding for fictional narratives and crafting identity systems for brands; they both rely on a consistent, cohesive thread that ties them together as one collective despite being made of many smaller and equally important parts. The body content, typography and color choices are characters in the greater story of the brand with its own message and emotional associations.

As I’ve come to enjoy utilizing and collecting old and new technology, I try to integrate that knowledge as closely as I can with my design concepts. As technology continues to improve and become more and more connected with office workflows, I find this knowledge benefits me greatly in assimilating and understanding how technology can be used in different and novel ways to more easily achieve previously unattainable goals. Switching between projects on different computer hardware has never been easier with cloud storage solutions, and even cloud-based workflow applications such as Miro and Figma. Working collectively in these programs allows for even greater learning and collaborative opportunites even over the internet. I feel as though my work process has only gotten more streamlined, efficient and productive through online-only learning, and am greatly looking forward to applying the skills I’ve learned once classes once again return to in-person learning.
